33. Magazine pre-production

My magazine is going to be a made to appeal to fans of heavy metal. To do this I am going to use gothic style texts and photography. As I found from the results collected from my survey many people do not buy music magazines or CDs. Because of this I am going to give the magazine away for free and generate funding through advertising alone. This would dramatically increase the reader numbers and this could pull in sales and interest for events and merchandise.

College magazine evaluation

I feel that I have created a magazine that would attract students and teens. To achieve this I used bright colours that can be related to 'punk' culture and text of a similar 'alternative' theme. My main reason for concentrating more on college events (gigs) is that to a lot of students going out and socialising is just as or maybe even more important than studying.
Overall I think the layout and choice of colours and content appeal greatly to my target audience. Therefore I feel I have achieved my goal for this project.

To achieve the rebellious metal/rock theme I used dark images and repeated the image of a man in a gas mask. I used blank paper to add the album text on so I could edit it afterwards. I was trying to represent with this an image like those of hung WW2 soldiers with pieces of card round their neck. The text itself was surrounded in red to make the appearance of blood. This same technique was also used with the text at the bottom of the cover.
For the background I used graffiti again to enforce the image of oppression and rebellion.
Overall I feel I have achieved the correct image to support my chosen theme.

AS Media Studies CD Cover project log

AS Media Studies CD Cover project

Firstly I cut the image from an original photo I had taken. Then I made the image black and white and darkened the lenses of the gasmask.

Back cover

I firstly inserted a background image I had taken and moved it into position.

Secondly I used the image I had cut previously and inserted it over the background image.

Then I added the song names and made the outer text red and edited the properties of the text.

Then I added the barcode and the all rights reserved text at the bottom.

Front Cover

This is the original image I used for the background.

I then used curves to change the colour of the background and make it more striking.

Next I inserted the same image used for the back cover but cut the bottom off.

This process was then repeated three times.

I then cut the head off the image and copied it seven times and placed underneath the previous three images.

I then cut and pasted the text from dafont.com and edited the outline so it was redder.

I then finally inserted text over the image and then repeated the same editing process used on the rest of the text.

AS Media Studies CD cover project backcover

CD Backcover:

The theme I chose for the band was a rebellious metal/rock band. To achieve the right image for the band I chose images that represent oppression and rebellion.
For the background I chose to use graffiti as it is commonly found in run down areas and reminded me of a wartorn country.
For the text I chose to surround it in red as to me this represents blood. The font also reminds me of blood.
The main image was chosen as it helps to enforce the theme I was trying for and I thought using a closeup of the image would be more effective.
